除了go to the bathroom 以外，美國人還說go to the John，或者說I want to wash up.或 I want to wash my hands.等。英國英語裡toilet 這個詞也有點麻煩，因為它還表示化妝台的意思。例如︰ to make one's toilet 跟廁所無關，而是化妝打扮。英國人上廁所常說go to W.C.，但也有不少委婉語。如 spend a penny，water the daisies 等。
英文表示廁所的詞很多。如︰restroom, Lavatory, Latrine 等。表示男女廁所，男廁所可以是men, gentlemen, men's, men's room, rooster 等，女廁所可以是women, ladies, women's, women's room, powder room 等。需要指出的是，英國人把男廁所叫gents，美國人則把女廁所叫Lady's room，用的是單數形式Lady。………………………. 摘錄自譯典通知訊報
